What does frequent travel do to your body?

We've all probably heard that flying dehydrates you and planes have germs. But the real consequences of frequent flying are more serious than we might think...

Research from expert Scott Cohen, deputy director of research of the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at the University of Surrey, recently published a paper titled A Darker Side of Hypermobility, which aggregated the data from 15 years of major studies on frequent travel.

Some highlights from his findings:

overexposure to radiation

Just seven round-trip flights a year from New York to Tokyo (about 85,000 miles) exceeds the limit for public exposure to radiation.

health issues from jetlag

Chronic jet lag can cause memory impairment, disrupted gene expression quickening aging, and increased risk of heart attack or stroke.

deep-vein thrombosis

“Air travel increases the risk of deep-vein thrombosis, or the formation of a blood clot often in the legs, and it exposes passengers to germs”.

germ exposure

Breathing recirculated air creates frequent germ exposure and traveling stress can even switch off genes that are linked to the immune system, leaving travelers less equipped to fight disease.

obesity risk

Frequent business travelers are more out of shape and at risk for obesity. Airline foods are packed with salt and sugar to preserve them at high altitudes and over long journeys.

increased stress and burnout

Stress can set in while preparing and making arrangements for travel. Business trips tend to carry a higher workload and thus extra stressors.

mental health risk

"The disruption of the circadian rhythm from jet lag affects mood, judgment, and concentration for up to six days."

Another study found a threefold increase in psychological claims on medical insurance as opposed to nontravelers.”

So while all this information isn't meant to scare you, traveling does have the potential to make our health deteriorate.
